Cover: To the Moon, scanography portrait, Maitha Demithan, 2009, courtesy of the artist and Tashkeel. The 24-year-old Emirati artist Demitham takes photos of her family in everyday traditional dress and uses a small, flatbed A4 scanner to fragment and recompose the images in order to digitally enhance them, especially the colours, as well as play with two-dimensionality. She writes that the “pose, body language and particular scan quality also include an emotional statement,” (sarasist.org). Demithan’s scanographies feature in RECHARGE: Experimenta 6th Biennial of Media Art. See the interview with Artistic Director Jonathan Parsons (p5 in print).
